The tape we recommend is Scotch Super 88 vinyl electrical tape,  we use the rolls that are 1-1/2 inches wide by 44 feet long.  Over the years, we tried cheap electrical tape but found that when we removed the tape there was often residual adhesive left on the painted surface.  The residual adhesive normally required alcohol to clean up.  It is often more cost effective to spend a little more and use a better product.
