The Different Purposes For Gold Plating
Is Gold Plating Right for Your Project?
Gold electroplating provides the ultimate combination of corrosion resistance, electrical conductivity, and aesthetic appeal. At Gold Plating Services, we categorize our gold plating services into three core engineering and decorative applications to meet your exact project specifications.
Often, your project will require a strategic combination of these processes. Discover which method aligns with your technical needs below.
🛠️ Our Three Core Gold Plating Capabilities
1. Decorative Gold Plating
While other metals mimic the appearance of gold, they lack its native corrosion resistance and physical longevity. Decorative gold plating is highly economical because the majority of the cost is in surface preparation, not the gold itself.
- Best Used For: Jewelry restoration, luxury goods, antiques, and high-end consumer products.
-
Our Recommendation: We typically recommend a cobalt-hardened 24-karat gold (99.7% pure). This deposit is three times harder than pure gold, offering exceptional wear resistance.
2. Corrosion Resistance & Diffusion Barriers
Copper and silver boast excellent electrical properties, but they degrade quickly in reactive environments. Gold plating acts as an impenetrable barrier to preserve substrate conductivity.
- Best Used For: RF load coils, laboratory equipment, aerospace components, and severe operating environments.
- Porosity Protection: Because even bright gold is slightly porous, we utilize transition element diffusion barriers (such as nickel, rhodium, or palladium) to prevent the base copper or silver from migrating to the surface.
- Non-Magnetic Applications: For high-energy research labs where nickel cannot be used, we mitigate diffusion by increasing pure gold thickness to ≥ 2.5µm or using a platinum-group element barrier (rhodium/palladium).
- Compliance Note: Our processes align with MIL-DTL-45204D specifications referencing gold as a Chemical Agent Resistant Coating (CARC).

3. Specialized Physical Properties (Reflectivity & Conductivity)
When your R&D project demands specific optical performance or extreme thermal management, gold delivers capabilities no other metal can match.
- Near-IR Reflectivity: Gold achieves in excess of 97% reflection across the electromagnetic spectrum (specifically optimized for 808nm and 820nm Nd:YAG medical lasers). We successfully apply 15µm of hardened gold directly to polished Type 316 stainless steel for these applications.
-
Extreme Thermal Environments: For components prone to
burning out under high heat, our engineering team designs multi-layer solutions—such as a pure nickel substrate, a heavy 25µm+ pure rhodium plate, and a final 55µm layer of 99.9+% pure gold deposit.

🔬 Technical Spotlight: Plating Stainless Steel
We specialize in gold electroplating onto stainless steel for both technical and decorative applications.
Because of its inert chemical properties, versatility of application, and relatively low cost, electroplating of gold has proven to be the answer to many engineering and technical problems.
Should you use a nickel under-plate?
The decision to use a nickel strike or under-plate depends strictly on your project's magnetic limits, adhesion requirements, and environmental exposure. To help you make the right engineering choice, read our comprehensive guide:
