Hard Gold vs. Soft Gold
Which Solution Do You Need?
Choosing the right gold plating solution depends entirely on the purpose of your finished product. While both yield a rich, beautiful finish, they are formulated differently to handle completely different environments—from high-touch decorative items to delicate aerospace electronics.
The Core Difference
- Hard Gold is 99.7% pure gold. It is alloyed with tiny amounts of hardeners (like cobalt) to resist wear and friction, creating a smooth, bright, and durable surface.
- Soft Gold is 99.9%+ pure gold, creating a ductile, highly conductive deposit designed for technical welding, wire bonding, and extreme heat resistance.

When to Choose Hard Gold
If your item will be handled frequently, worn, or exposed to mechanical wear, Hard Gold is the standard choice. The trace amounts of cobalt form a tightly bound grain structure that stops the gold from rubbing off or scratching easily. Hard Gold can be scratched.
- Jewelry & Watches: Essential for pieces requiring long-lasting shine and wear resistance.
- Decorative Elements: Ideal for firearms, coins, emblems, restoration projects, and household hardware.
- Sliding Electrical Contacts: Perfect for PCB fingers, contact switches, and parts that click or slide together repeatedly.

When to Choose Soft Gold
If your project requires extreme electrical conductivity, chemical resistance, or heavy thickness buildup without cracking, Soft Gold is required. Because it contains no hardeners, it remains highly flexible (ductile). Under a microscope, its grain looks like large boulders, making it poor for abrasion but excellent for bonding.
- Electronics & Semiconductors: Perfect for wire bonding, circuit board trace connectivity, and solder-ability.
- Medical Devices: Safe and highly biocompatible for components used in surgical or electronic medical implants.
- High-Temperature Components: Ideal for heavy-duty induction load coils or high-heat environments where alloys would degrade.
- ❌ Note: Do not use soft gold for jewelry or high-touch decorative items, as it will wear away quickly under friction.
